I Have a Dream . . . Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observed at Friendship House MSU

mlk2Many Internationals come to Friendship House MSU curious about the meaning and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the national day that honors his memory (January 19, 2o15). Friendship House joins the many organizations across the U.S. on this day each year who mark the occasion by a Day of Service. Because Friendship House exists to serve 52 weeks of the year with an entirely volunteer force of servants, we keep our doors on this day open so as to continue to be of service to others.

Our classes meeting today specifically address the life, times and contributions of Dr. King to equality, civil rights, tolerance, non-violence and freedom. One of our Beginning English classes meeting for the first time today spent the entire class listening to Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream Speech” (delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963 before more than 250,000 assembled citizens) as well as to a Voice of America program about Dr. King and his life.

The students had many questions, such as why was he killed, why is he considered a great American and what were the things that he and his movement accomplished. Teachers Larisa & Stefanie were well-prepared with answers and the discussion was lively and informative. We thank the teachers of Friendship House MSU for devoting much preparation time to this subject as well as the students for their thoughtful and probing interest to better understand this great man , the movement he led and its resulting (and continuing) impact on American laws, culture and society.
